In the crypto world, there has always been a tension between security and usability.
On one side, you have hardware wallets that feel like safes: secure, but clunky. Cables, Bluetooth pairing, batteries, tiny screens, and apps that don’t really scream “simplicity”.
On the other side, you have hot wallets: fast, flexible, perfect for daily trades, transfers and DeFi apps – but closer to the edge when it comes to security.
With Solflare Shield, we’re closing that gap.
Solflare Shield is our new tap-to-use, battery-free hardware wallet designed specifically for Solana and fully integrated into the Solflare app.
It is a slim, card-shaped vault that gives you true cold storage security while still feeling as simple as using Solflare on your phone.
It’s your vault and your wallet, all in one Solflare experience.
What is Solflare Shield?
Solflare Shield is a credit card–sized hardware wallet that stores your private keys inside a secure element chip. There’s no screen, no cables, no Bluetooth, and no battery.
It looks like any other card in your wallet. And you use it by simply tapping the card to your phone to securely approve transactions in the Solflare mobile app.
It’s cold storage with a UX that actually fits how people use Solana today: mobile-first, fast, and simple.
How Solflare Shield works
Solflare Shield is fully integrated into the Solflare mobile app. There is no third-party software or extra interfaces to use. You use it through your Solflare app, just like you normally would, but with the added layer of security:
Your wallet’s private keys are generated in Solflare and stored on the card’s secure chip
They never leave the card
Every action, like staking, swaps, and transfers, requires your physical tap + PIN or biometrics
Once set up, this is what happens whenever you want to make a transaction from your Solflare Shield:
You initiate the action in the Solflare app (stake, swap, transfer, etc.)
The app prompts you to tap your Shield
You hold the card to your phone, it communicates via NFC
Your Shield’s secure chip signs the transaction, without exposing your private key
You confirm with PIN or biometric
If someone steals your phone, they can’t sign without the Shield. If someone steals your Shield, it’s useless without your PIN, and after several wrong attempts, it locks automatically and becomes unusable.
Your keys never leave the card. Your funds remain fully self-custodial. You’re always in control.
One experience: Hot wallet + Cold storage
Instead of juggling different apps, devices, and flows, Solflare lets you manage everything in one place:
Your hot wallet for everyday spending and micro-transactions
Your Solflare Shield cold wallet for long-term holdings and sensitive actions
All in the same Solflare interface, with the same design and the same security standards.
You just choose which wallet signs what:
Quick swaps, degen stuff, NFTs? Use your hot wallet.
Long-term holdings and staking, large transfers, big swaps,? Tap your Shield.
This is cold storage you can actually use.

How is a “simple card” so secure?
Unlike traditional hardware wallets that come in the form of devices with cables, batteries and screens, Solflare Shield looks like any other debit card in your wallet. But how is that possible?
The problem with traditional hardware wallets
Most hardware wallets are built to work with many wallets and many chains. That means they often have to make up for weak spots in some of the software wallets they connect to.
For example, some wallets don’t have reliable transaction simulations or continuous threat monitoring. To fix that, hardware wallets added things like “clear signing” on the device screen, turning a simple chip into a full device that needs:
a screen
a battery and charging
cables or Bluetooth
extra steps for every action
That added complexity comes with trade-offs:
Harder to carry around (not something you just keep in your wallet)
More friction when you want to act quickly
More parts that can break over time
Higher prices, often $150–$200
In other words: because some wallets are weaker, everyone pays the price in UX and cost.
So we asked: What would a hardware wallet look like if it was designed specifically for Solana users who live on mobile?
Solflare Shield is our answer.
How Solflare keeps it simple
At first glance, Solflare Shield looks almost too simple. It’s just a sleek card with a chip with no screen, cables, or battery.
So how is it still extremely secure? The answer is this: Solflare combines two layers of protection:
Solflare’s integrated software security – advanced simulations, checks, and threat monitoring in the hot wallet
Solflare Shield’s cold-storage hardware security – a secure element chip that never exposes your private keys
Since Solflare Shield works exclusively with the Solflare app which already does so much heavy lifting on the software side, it doesn’t need to compensate for other wallets’ shortcomings.
Your Solflare hot wallet already gives you the security features like:
Transaction previews before signings
Ongoing security checks
A well-tested signing flow
So Shield only needs to do what a hardware wallet is meant to do:
Keep your keys offline in a secure chip and sign transactions without ever exposing them.
That’s it. No screens. No cables. No Bluetooth. Just tap-to-sign from a card that actually fits in your wallet. You get Solflare’s integrated software security reinforced with Solflare Shield’s cold-storage security. All managed through your Solflare app.
Who it’s for
Shield is built for three main groups of users:
Long-term storers
Users who want a reliable vault for their savings. They don’t move funds often, but when they do, they want maximum peace of mind and clear visibility.
Active Solana users (for sensitive actions)
People who live in Solana DeFi, staking, NFTs, and swaps — and want extra hardware security for bigger moves, without the usual hardware-style friction. Not for dozens of micro-transactions per day, but perfect for meaningful ones.
New or upgrading users
Users who have:
recently been scared by hacks, phishing, or exchange issues, or
simply reached the point where their portfolio is “too big to risk.”
They don’t want a $200 gadget on their desk. They want something affordable, trustworthy, and easy to use – especially on mobile.
If your crypto life is mobile-first and Solana-heavy, Shield is built exactly for you.
